The Still Point

Two voices within compete for your time, attention, and commitment. The higher voice Christians call the will of God; the lower voice Buddhists call suffering.

The lower voice predominates until the sufferer learns to subdue it; Christians call this death, the first requisite of the New Birth.

The higher voice emerges only when the lower voice is quieted. One can do this is several ways: worship, a mantra or sutra kept in consciousness driving out the extraneous call of the devil (another name for the lower voice).
