This interest goes back from the time Linux was invented.  In the early 80's I had refused to buy an IBM desktop although they had almost a corner on the market at the time.  Since they put msdos on their machines, I bought a CPM computer.  Eventually there was virtually no software for it, so in desperation I got a msdos card.  
I experimented with some early operating systems based on Unix, and when Linus Torvalds, a Finnish computer science student, called into being an evolving open source operating system.  I've followed it for the last 15 years, and today I have little use for MSDOS (Microsoft Windows).  Our windows are much better IMHO.
